Hughie and Billy were greater together than the sum of their parts. Billy's vibrato is thicker than a triple chocolate shake and Hughie's single coil sound is the perfect blend. When they recorded this record they panned Billy's guitar hard to one side and Hughie's guitar hard to the other side. Big headstock Strat vs 61 Black Beauty Les Paul Custom covers all the bases. Over 9 minutes of the origional recording ended up on the cutting room floor so they could get it on the B side of the LP. They were the finest live band on the planet at that time.

We wore out many copies of this album! Mom had a rule: One rock/roll album, one 'show tunes' record, one Classic piece. Because this was so long, it counted as three rock/roll albums! She like the drumming...reminded her of Gene Krupa. Every kid I knew was memorizing the drum solo!

first off , you need to listen to the entire album. .... this is a hunter / jerry song. hunter is a bard...(you can find him solo live all over the internet.... jerry is kind of a parting low level christian. the other writing team is bob and john barlow .... barlow is more of a outlaw cowboy ..... so there is a dichotomy in each and every outing..... there are also several other writers in the band..... anyway , great job , and you might want to try black peter.... really , try this whole lp and the same years workingmans dead for the other side of the coin...

John, have you ever listened to White Lion and their guitarist, Vito Bratta? They released their debut album in 1985 and their last album, Mane Attraction in 1991, and then split up in 1992. After the split, Vito put down his guitar and never really picked it back up since. He has a very unique and melodic style and has produced some of the most beautiful guitar solos and guitar work that I’ve heard. Michael Sweet, singer and lead guitarist for Stryper, described Vito’s solos as “songs within songs”. Here is an instrumental piece from their last album, “Blue Monday”, live. “In 1979, Kerry Livgren, Kansas main songwriter, converted to Christianity, which influenced his subsequent work. He continued to work with Kansas, formed a new band called AD, and pursued a solo career. This is probably the main reason that Kansas dropped off after Monolith as it was released in 1979.

A few comments here about no synths being used on ommadawn. Just to say that like on hergest ridge there is a heavy use of a Solina String Ensemble synth as well as an ARP 2600 monophonic synth.....

Welcome to a band that might well change your outlook on what is possible with guitar, drums, keys and bass, with a de-facto genius at the controls, zero budget and no record deal. Cardiacs were 100% self produced and released, and this allowed them total artistic freedom. I'd love to hear/see your opinion on "Buds And Spawn" from their 1989 album "On Land And In The Sea".
